MMMH&MC eyes establishment of Human Milk Bank in Ilocos Norte
By: John Michael Mugas
BATAC CITY -- Staying true to its recognition as a “Mother-Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative” accredited by the Department of Health for several years, the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC) is set to roll out the full implementation of a functional Human Milk Bank (HMB) this year.
In strengthening efforts under this project, an HMB orientation was organized last January 14, 2019 at MMMH&MC which was attended by the Hospital HMB Team, TWG, department, section and unit representatives and consultants from various institutions including International Milk Bank, TG Scientific Equipment Corporation and Dr. Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital.
In an interview Wednesday, MMMH&MC’s HMB program coordinator, Dr. Rocamia Fermin, said "efforts to establish a functional HMB started years before the hospital’s commitment under the Performance Governance System (PGS), which the institution is currently pursuing.”
She noted that its creation will not only directly benefit the province of Ilocos Norte, but other neighbouring provinces as well. “We are looking at the possibility of ensuring the sustainability and importance of breastfeeding. Donated human milk is upheld in providing optimal nutrition and immunological protection of all Ilocano infants, whose mother’s own milk is unavailable,” she added.
