On February 12, 2019 (Tuesday), the Dental Department in cooperation with the City Schools Division of Batac conducted a lecture on Basic Oral Health Care to pupils, teachers and parents. Also, Oral Examination was conducted and Topical Flouride Application was given to Kinder and Grade 1 pupils while the application of Pit and Fissure Sealant was given to Grade 2 and Grade 3 students. The healthy smile was established in 2004 under Dr. Divina Gracia C. Nueva. Since then, the Dental Department annually look for the healthiest oral cavity among the pupils in cooperation with the City Schools Division of Batac which currently headed by Dr. Joann A. Corpuz, Ed.D., CESO IV.
 
Oral Month
In celebration of the 51st Hospital Foundation Week, the Dental department in collaboration with the Philippine Dental Association- Ilocos Norte Dental Chapter sponsored the toothbrush and toothpaste for the Healthy Smile 2019, the dental staff sponsored the cash prizes for the winners The Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical center headed by the Medical Center Chief Dra. Maria Lourdes K. Otayza and the City School Division of Batac agreed that the dental staff of the MMMH-MC will conduct an oral examination to all the students that is strengthened under the Memorandum of Agreement signed by both parties.
Oral Month
That is why the Dental Department holds this program every year to search for the healthiest and decay free student. This year, the program was held on February 20 2019 at the 5th floor function hall, wherein top 10 students from different public elementary schools of Batac were selected. The selection process started in November 2018. Pre-selected 26 orally fit children from different schools were asked to come back last February 19, 2019 for re-assessment/pre-screening. On February 20, 2019, the final clinical examination and selection of the top 3 Orally Fit Child was conducted. As part of the Healthy Smile Contest 2019, Dr. Lois Gabrielle Marquez, Dentist II of DepEd delivered her lecture about the Basic Oral Health Care (BOHC) to the parents and pupils and she also presented an audio-visual presentation about Proper tooth brushing techniques and proper and healthy foods to take.
Dr. Ma. Constancia Celina Ferraris, the chairman of this year’s foundation anniversary celebration stated that - “having a complete set of teeth is the best asset we have” and she stressed the importance of maintaining healthy gums and teeth most especially to children. Dr. Imelda Gamboa, the President of the Ilocos Norte Dental Chapter delivered a simple lecture and message to the participants and introduced the program of the Philippine Dental Association, - “TOOTH DECAY HINDI OKAY”. Dr. Lady Angeli Lenor Pagdilao, Chairman of the Dental Department of the hospital announced the Top 3 winners of the Search for Healthy Smile Contest 2019. Bagging the 1st place is Mia Anjelene Cristobal from Baay Elementary School, Shaquira Salut of CAMES and Fame Clea Aspili were 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively. The victors were given a medal and cash prizes. All the attendees on the said contest received a dental kit from INDC and Dr. Veronica Pumaras. - BY: Melvin Bryan A. Cervantes, DDM
